Classification of Points

• Classification of Points: Classification of the points can be done based on the Physiological Function rendered by those points, and the Location of points along the  Channel. Thus, we have ¹Analgesic Points, ²Sedative Points, ³Homeostatic Points,    ⁴Immune Enhancing Points,  ⁵Tonification Points,  ⁶Motor Points, ⁷Endocrine Points,      ⁸ Edema Points,  ⁹Anesthetic Points,  ¹⁰Emergency Points,  ¹¹Alarm Points, ¹²Anti-allergic Points and  ¹³Influential Points. 
  

 
 The sensitive, painful points shown by thepatient may not correspond to any conventional Acupuncture points. Such pointsare known as Random points or  ¹⁴Ah-shipoints.  Certain major areas like Face,Nape (Back of the Head and Neck), Chest, Abdomen, Pelvis and Low Back aretreated by specific  ¹⁵DistalPoints.  On each channel we can findone  ¹⁶Source Point(Yuan Source Point),  one  ¹⁷ Luo connecting point,and one  ¹⁸Xi-cleftpoint. At the nail bases where channels begin or end, we can locate  ¹⁹Jingwell points. Certainpoints do not lie on meridians or channels, and are known as  ²⁰Extra points or Extraordinary points.
 
Certain points have to behandled with utmost precaution and are branded as ²¹Dangerouspoints. Some  ²²ForbiddenPoints are totally not prescribed for treatment except for convenience ofAnatomical location and reference.

1.      Analgesic Points are used torelieve pain. The subjective physiological effect was explained in the earlierpages.
2.      Sedative Points are pointsthat provide Physical as well as Psychological Sedation by regulating theMelatonin and Dopamine levels in Blood.
3.      Homeostatic Points are usedfor various Homeostatic conditions like Blood Pressure, Temperature etc.  The subjective effect was earlier explained.
4.      Immune Enhancing points areused during disease and health equally.
5.      Tonification points arealmost similar to Immune Enhancing points. In addition they stimulate Growth,Appetite and Absorption of nutrients.
6.      Motor Recovery points thatlie in deep muscles are used for paralytic conditions. The mechanism will beexplained in the advanced lessons.
7.      Endocrine points havespecific action on the Endocrine glands.
8.      Edema points on stimulationact to reduce the excess fluids in the body, abscesses, excess fat in adiposetissues etc., by stimulating the Spleen.
9.      Anesthetic Points  are used during Surgical operations.  Through to through needling of points whichlie in a straight line will benumb the intermediate area over which incisionscan be made for visceral operations. Thus, Thro’ to thro’ needling of ST 20 ---ST 25  will benumb the area covered inbetween. Various sets of points are used for various surgical operations.
 
10. Emergency points are used tobring a person to consciousness at the time of Shocks, Fits, Drowning, Coma andFainting.  Jingwell points are used forthis purpose.  Pricking of thesepoints  results in awakening due to therelease of Adrenaline and increased Blood flow to the Brain.
11. Each Organ has at least oneAlarm point, which happens to be a Meridianpoint The Alarm point of any organ may lie on any meridian.  LU 1 is the alarm point of the Lungs, GB 24and GB 21 are alarm points of the Gall Bladder, LIV 6 and LIV 14 are alarmpoints of the Liver.  Other alarm pointslie in channels other than the organ’s own channel. The Alarm Points are usedfor both Diagnosis and Treatment of the affected Organ.
 
 
12. Anti allergic points act onthe toxic substances or allergens, by producing mediators like Anti Histamine,and Cortico Steroids.
13. Influential Points havespecific action on specific tissues like Bone tissue, Muscular tissue, Vascularwalls, Bone Marrow cells, Blood components etc. The points  trigger off certainphysiological and Bio chemical products which result ultimately in the repairand improvement of the specific tissues. Thus, LU 9 is an Influential point for the Vascular system, as itprimarily results in the release of Anti-clot mediator Heparin, and secondlyenhances the functioning of the Lungs for reducing the content ofCarboxy-Hemoglobin.
14. Ah-shi points are pointswhich exhibit pain and sensitivity in the particular patient.  They are not Meridian or Extra points, but are pricked forrelief.
15. Any point around an affectedarea is a Local point. Any point that has specific action over the affectedarea but lies away from that area itself is a Distal point.  However, thereare Six major Distal points viz., LI-4 (Face), LU-7 (Nape),   P-6 (Chest),   ST-36 (Abdomen), UB-40 (Low Back), SP-6(Pelvis and Uterus).     Other minordistal points are also used.
16. Yuan Source Point or SourcePoint of a Channel is always proximal to the extremities, around the Wrists andAnkles.  The origin of the Channelsenergy lies at these rich source points. The source points receive the energy from the coupled channels Luopoint.
17. Luo Connecting Point or LuoPoint of a Channel is used to establish Yin-Yang equilibrium of coupledchannels and organs.  Energy flows fromthe Luo point of the channel to the coupled channel’s source point. The pathwayof energy flow from Yin to Yang  orotherwise is a Luo Channel.
18.  Xi-cleft point of a channel is the point usedduring Acute conditions, to immediately control the Organ.
19. Jingwell Points are pointsat the Nail bases, and are the starting or ending points of a Channel.  They are of use in Emergencies.
20. Extra Points are AcupuncturePoints that do not have interconnecting Meridians.  All other points are commonly known as Meridian points.
21. Dangerous Points are thosepoints very close to vital Arteries and Visceral Organs. The depth and mode ofneedling should be carefully observed every time and should be done withexpertise at such dangerous points.
22. Forbidden Points  are just Anatomical Landmarks which aretotally forbidden to Needling, Moxa or Laser therapies.
